Liberating play-button on MacBook from the iTunes monopoly

March 20, 2011

The iTunes has full control over the MacBook play-button and it launches every time we press this key. We like iTunes, but there are plenty of other media players.

We offer you a simple way to unbind the play/pause key from launching iTunes. Open a Terminal and type the following:

sudo chmod -x /Applications/

Your play-button is free now!

To keep iTunes accessible you can create a simple shell script in Automator:

sudo chmod +x /Applications/
/Applications/ &
sudo chmod -x /Applications/

Note that this solution is only valid for Snow Leopard.
